Google Simplifies AI-Powered Shopping With New Agentic Commerce Protocol

Google has introduced a major push into AI-powered retail with its new agentic commerce protocol, aiming to make online shopping more seamless, personalized, and efficient. The announcement includes an open-standard framework called the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), designed to let artificial intelligence agents handle searches and purchases on behalf of users across platforms.

This move marks a shift from traditional search-and-click consumer behaviour to a more interactive “agentic commerce” experience, where AI systems complete multi-step shopping tasks with minimal human input.

What Is the Universal Commerce Protocol?

The Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) is an open-source standard co-developed by Google and major retail partners, including Shopify, Walmart, Target, Etsy, and Wayfair. It provides a common language for AI agents, retail systems, and payment services to interact smoothly throughout the shopping journey, from product discovery to checkout and post-purchase processes.

With UCP, retailers no longer need to build separate integrations for every AI agent or platform. Instead, AI systems can dynamically discover store inventory, pricing, and payment capabilities using a standardized set of APIs and protocols.

Google emphasises that merchants remain the seller of record, meaning they retain control over customer data, branding, and fulfillment.

How It Changes Shopping

AI Agents Handle Tasks

Under the agentic commerce framework, intelligent agents can:

  • Suggest products based on preferences
  • Compare options and find deals
  • Navigate carts and discounts
  • Complete purchases directly within conversational AI interfaces

This reduces friction from browsing to transaction — eliminating the traditional multi-step checkout flow many online shoppers are used to.

Direct Checkout in AI Interfaces

Retailers using UCP will soon support direct checkout inside Google’s AI surfaces, such as the AI Mode in Search and the Gemini app. That means users may be able to buy products without leaving their search or chat interface, signalling a deeper integration between AI and commerce than before.

This capability is part of Google’s broader effort to reduce cart abandonment by streamlining the purchase process and connecting highly intent-driven shoppers with instant purchase options.

What This Means for Retailers

Google’s open standard aims to help merchants:

  • Reach customers at the moment of purchase intent
  • Reduce integration costs by following one unified protocol
  • Leverage AI-driven insights to personalise offers and engagements

Industry partners like Commerce (parent company of BigCommerce and Feedonomics) have already backed UCP, noting it simplifies interactions between product data and AI systems, creating smoother paths from discovery to sale.

The Bigger Picture

The introduction of UCP and related tools represents Google’s broader strategy to lead in AI-driven retail experiences. The company is positioning its technologies, including the Gemini AI assistant and AI Mode search enhancements, as central to the future of online shopping, where conversational AI not only suggests products but also confirms and processes purchases.

This evolution could redefine customer behaviour, shifting shopping from passive browsing to proactive AI-assisted buying, a trend already gaining momentum in global e-commerce.
