IT Exports Poised to Hit $5 Billion Mark

Pakistan’s information technology (IT) and IT-enabled services exports are showing strong momentum and are poised to exceed the $5 billion annual target, according to recent data released by the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP). The jump comes amid a sustained export surge that has captured global market demand and policy support.

In December 2025, IT export receipts reached a record $437 million, the first month in which monthly exports topped the $400 million level. This figure marked a 23 percent month-on-month increase and about 26 percent year-on-year growth, indicating accelerating industry competitiveness and market penetration.

Growth Trends and Historical Perspective

The cumulative performance of IT exports in the first half of fiscal year 2025-26 (July–December) reached approximately $2.24 billion, up from around $1.87 billion in the same period the previous year, about 20 percent growth overall.

A decade ago, annual IT exports stood at nearly $2 billion, with limited diversification and global visibility. By FY2024-25, exports had climbed to $3.8 billion, despite global economic headwinds. The consistent rise in monthly records — from roughly $342 million in March 2025 to $437 million in December — reflects a structural shift rather than isolated volatility.

Analysts and industry observers say that if monthly exports remain in the $400–450 million range, Pakistan is well positioned to achieve, and potentially surpass, the $5 billion export milestone by the end of the fiscal year in June 2026.

What’s Driving the Surge

Several factors are contributing to this rapid expansion:

  • Policy Reforms: The SBP raised exporters’ retention limits in Exporters’ Specialised Foreign Currency Accounts (ESFCA) from 35 percent to 50 percent, boosting cash flow, enabling reinvestment, and reducing reliance on domestic financing.
  • Global Demand: As international firms increasingly outsource software, cloud services, cybersecurity, and digital transformation, cost-competitive markets like Pakistan are gaining prominence.
  • Diversified Markets: Pakistani IT firms are expanding beyond traditional North American and European clients to the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), Southeast Asia, and Africa, widening revenue streams.
  • Freelancers and SMEs: Freelancers now contribute a significant share of export receipts, especially in software development, digital marketing, data analytics, and online consulting, and estimates suggest these inflows could reach $800 million to $1 billion annually if current trends continue.

Broader Economic Implications

IT exports now account for more than 40 percent of Pakistan’s total services exports, positioning the sector as a key stabiliser of foreign exchange earnings amid balance-of-payments pressures. Unlike many merchandise exports, IT services depend less on imported inputs, making their net contribution to foreign exchange comparatively higher.

The sector also supports high-value jobs for young professionals, with multiplier effects across telecommunications, fintech, education, and professional services. Its growth has boosted entrepreneurship and global market access for startups and freelancers.

What Comes Next

Sustaining this growth will depend on continued policy support, improvements in digital infrastructure, and alignment of skills training with global demand, especially in areas such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, cloud computing, and cybersecurity.

Pakistan’s IT sector appears increasingly capable of turning the $5 billion export target into reality for FY2025-26, shaping a future where technology and services form a core pillar of economic resilience and export diversification.
