Pakistan’s Pakistan Telecommunication Authority has confirmed that the 5G spectrum auction will be held on March 10, 2026, marking a major milestone in the country’s telecom sector and next-generation mobile services rollout.
Telecom operators and industry stakeholders have been preparing for the long-anticipated auction, which is expected to unlock new opportunities for enhanced connectivity, faster data speeds, and expanded mobile broadband services across the country.
597 MHz Spectrum on Offer
The auction will make a total of 597 megahertz (MHz) of spectrum available across several frequency bands. Pakistan is mandating that each of the three existing mobile network operators purchase a minimum of 100 MHz as part of the licensing conditions, ensuring broad participation and a competitive bidding process.
The first round of the auction will offer the 2,600 MHz and 3,500 MHz bands, which are among the key blocks designated for 5G services. The multi-round electronic clock auction format is designed to allow operators to competitively bid for blocks of spectrum while encouraging efficient allocation.
Timeline and Requirements
Interested bidders must submit their applications by February 27, 2026, along with a $15 million bank guarantee, as part of the qualification criteria. Mock auctions will be held ahead of the main allocation to familiarise participants with the process.
Once the auction concludes, operators are expected to finalise spectrum assignments quickly and begin preparations for network upgrades. Regulatory officials have estimated that commercial 5G rollout could begin within three to six months after licences are issued, although full coverage expansion will take longer as new infrastructure is deployed.
Expected Benefits and Industry Outlook
Authorities say the 5G auction and subsequent rollout will drive improved mobile broadband speeds and network quality, better meeting growing data demand from consumers and businesses. PTA officials have highlighted potential average revenue per user (ARPU) growth from enhanced service offerings and increased data consumption, which could help boost telecom industry earnings over time.
In addition to national connectivity improvements, the auction framework includes incentives to speed up fibre infrastructure development and relaxation of certain regulatory terms to support more rapid deployment. Eliminating right-of-way fees for fibre projects is one measure intended to reduce barriers to infrastructure expansion.
National Connectivity Goals
The 5G auction is part of Pakistan’s wider digital agenda, encompassing both next-generation technology adoption and improvements to existing 4G services. The country’s telecom sector has steadily grown in recent years, with millions of new mobile subscribers connected and increasing data usage driving demand for faster, more reliable networks.
Authorities view the March 10 auction as a key step toward enhancing Pakistan’s digital competitiveness and enabling new applications in areas such as mobile broadband, enterprise solutions, Internet of Things (IoT), and future innovation platforms.
