The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast a nationwide spell of rain, thunderstorms, and strong winds starting from March 24, as a powerful western weather system moves into the region.
According to the Met Office, the system is expected to affect multiple regions with varying intensity and may persist until March 30 or 31, bringing widespread weather changes across the country.
Heavy Rain, Hailstorms, and Snowfall Expected
Under the influence of the system, rain, wind, and thunderstorms are expected in most parts of Pakistan, with heavy downpours, isolated hailstorms, and snowfall in northern areas.
Regions likely to be affected include:
- Punjab: Lahore, Rawalpindi, Faisalabad, Multan, Sialkot and surrounding districts
- Khyber Pakhtunkhwa: Peshawar, Swat, Abbottabad, Mansehra and tribal districts
- Balochistan: Quetta, Gwadar, Khuzdar and several southern districts
- Sindh: Karachi, Hyderabad, Sukkur and nearby areas
- Gilgit-Baltistan and Kashmir: Snowfall over hills and mountainous regions
The rainfall is expected in phases, with short gaps between weather activity.
Flood and Landslide Risks Highlighted
Authorities have warned of flash floods in Balochistan between March 25 and 28, particularly in low-lying and vulnerable areas.
Similarly, local streams and nullahs in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa may overflow between March 28 and 30, raising flood risks in the region.
The PMD also cautioned that landslides could occur in northern mountainous areas, including parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Kashmir.
Risk to Infrastructure and Agriculture
Strong winds, lightning, and hailstorms may damage:
- Electric poles and solar panels
- Billboards and weak structures
- Standing crops in agricultural areas
Farmers have been advised to plan agricultural activities carefully during the forecast period.
Advisory for Public and Authorities
The Met Office has urged citizens to avoid unnecessary travel during severe weather, especially in hilly and flood-prone areas.
Authorities have been directed to remain alert and take precautionary measures to handle any emergency during the rain spell.
