The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has revealed some major structural changes for the HBL Pakistan Super League (HBL PSL) as it prepares for its 11th edition, which marks the beginning of a new era of competitiveness, transparency, and commercial development for the premier T20 franchise-based format in Pakistan.
In a major departure from its traditions, the league will move from its Player Draft format to hold a Player Auction in the HBL PSL 11. This is in line with its effort to ensure an open system where players are rewarded in accordance with their performance.
Auction Model Replaces Draft System
Under the revamped player acquisition framework introduced by PCB officials:
- Each franchise may retain up to four players, with a limit of one per category. Previously, teams could retain up to eight players plus a mentor and brand ambassador, and also use a Right to Match (RTM) option to bring back a ninth player.
- Rules concerning Mentors, Brand Ambassadors, and RTM options have been abolished, streamlining roster building and reinforcing merit-based selection.
- Newly added franchises joining the expanded eight-team PSL will be permitted to select and retain four players before entering the player auction.
- Each team can also make one direct signing of a foreign player who did not play in HBL PSL X, allowing squads to bring in fresh international talent and strategically strengthen their line-ups ahead of the season.
These changes are designed to level the playing field across all franchises and create greater excitement during the player acquisition process.
Bigger Salary Pool to Attract Talent
The PCB has also increased the player salary purse to USD 1.6 million per franchise for HBL PSL 11, arguably one of the largest purse pools ever in the history of the league, to make it more competitive at the global level.
The improvements offer better financial awards for the players, at the same time giving the franchises more latitude to attract high-quality domestic and international cricketers who can further enhance the standard of playing, thereby engaging more fans.
A New Chapter for PSL 11
The reforms come as part of a larger strategic effort by the PCB to build on the commercial success of the PSL and expand its global footprint. The HBL PSL 11 season is officially scheduled to kick off on 26 March 2026, with an expanded eight-team format that includes the newly added Hyderabad and Sialkot franchises.
Fans and analysts have welcomed these changes as moves that could increase competitive balance, boost viewership, and make PSL more attractive to corporate investors and international players.
Why This Matters
Shifting to an auction format aligns the HBL PSL with other major T20 leagues around the world, such as the Indian Premier League (IPL), where auctions generate high anticipation and commercial interest. By modernising player acquisition and removing legacy constraints like RTM options, the PCB aims to make squad building more transparent and performance-oriented.
Increased salary caps are also expected to help retain top local talent, offsetting competition from foreign leagues that could otherwise lure Pakistan’s best players away.
