US, Iran Agree to Pakistan’s Two-Week Ceasefire Framework as Islamabad Set to Host Talks

The United States and Iran have agreed to a Pakistan-backed two-week ceasefire framework, marking a major diplomatic development after weeks of escalating war and fears of a wider regional conflict. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced that both sides, “along with their allies,” had agreed to an immediate ceasefire and invited US and Iranian delegations to Islamabad on April 10, 2026, for further negotiations.

The breakthrough came just hours before a deadline set by US President Donald Trump, who had warned Tehran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz or face devastating attacks on civilian infrastructure. Trump later confirmed a “double-sided ceasefire,” saying both sides were moving toward a broader agreement.

Islamabad Emerges as a Diplomatic Venue

A central part of the development is Pakistan’s role as mediator. According to the report, Islamabad is not only the source of the ceasefire framework but also the venue for the next phase of negotiations. Iran’s Supreme National Security Council said the details of the arrangement would be finalized in political talks in Islamabad within 15 days.

That gives Pakistan an unusually prominent diplomatic position in a conflict that has already affected nearly a dozen countries and shaken global energy markets. The move also signals that both Washington and Tehran see value in a neutral venue for trying to turn a military pause into a more durable settlement. This is an inference based on both sides agreeing to continue talks in Islamabad.

Strait of Hormuz Remains the Core Condition

The ceasefire is closely tied to the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical oil shipping routes. Trump’s shift toward diplomacy was linked to Iran’s willingness to pause counterattacks and allow safe passage through the waterway, according to the report.

That detail matters because the strait typically carries about one-fifth of global oil shipments, meaning any disruption there has immediate consequences for fuel prices, trade flows, and inflation worldwide. Markets reacted quickly to the ceasefire news, with oil prices falling sharply and stock futures rising.

Both Sides Claim Victory

Even though both countries agreed to the framework, neither side presented it as a concession. Trump described the arrangement as a result of US military leverage and said Washington had exceeded its military objectives. Iran’s Supreme National Security Council framed the ceasefire as proof that the US had accepted Iran’s conditions and said the enemy had been “begging for a ceasefire.”

This competing narrative shows that the ceasefire is less a peace deal than a strategic pause, with each side trying to preserve domestic and international leverage heading into talks. That is an inference from the statements made by both governments and the temporary nature of the agreement.

Scope of the Truce Still Looks Unclear

One of the most important details in the report is that the ceasefire’s full scope remains disputed. Prime Minister Shehbaz said the arrangement applies “everywhere, including Lebanon and elsewhere,” and the report says two White House officials confirmed Israel had agreed to the two-week ceasefire and to suspend its bombing campaign on Iran.

But the same report also says Israeli media, citing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, suggested the arrangement does not include Lebanon, while other reporting indicated Israel may continue attacks there. That contradiction makes it clear the ceasefire may be narrower and more fragile than the headline suggests.

Fragile Calm After Weeks of War

The ceasefire comes after a war that the report says has entered its sixth week, with more than 5,000 deaths across nearly a dozen countries, including more than 1,600 civilians in Iran and over 1,000 civilians in Lebanon, according to government and human-rights tallies cited in the article.

Even after the announcement, the situation remained unstable. The report notes that missiles were still detected from Iran, explosions were heard in Tel Aviv, and Israeli forces were reported to be striking back at launch sites. That suggests the agreement may take time to fully filter down through military chains of command, or that both sides are still testing the boundaries of the truce.

Why This Matters for Pakistan

For Pakistan, this is more than a diplomatic headline. The country had already urged a two-week extension to Trump’s deadline in order to allow diplomacy to continue, and now that appeal appears to have evolved into the core framework accepted by both sides.

If Islamabad-hosted talks on April 10 produce a broader settlement, Pakistan could strengthen its image as a regional diplomatic bridge at a time of intense geopolitical polarization. If the ceasefire collapses, however, the country may still gain recognition for trying to prevent a wider war and energy shock. This is an inference based on Pakistan’s mediation role and the market sensitivity around the Strait of Hormuz.

The Real Test Starts Now

The agreement has lowered immediate fears of a dramatic military escalation, but it has not resolved the deeper disputes between Washington, Tehran, and their allies. The next two weeks will test whether the ceasefire is simply a tactical pause or the beginning of a broader regional de-escalation.

For now, the headline is historic: a Pakistan-backed diplomatic framework has created a rare opening in one of the world’s most dangerous conflicts. But the contradictions over enforcement, the continuing strikes, and the unresolved terms show that this story is still unfolding.
