The face of Pakistan cricket was transformed entirely on Thursday as a historic auction was successfully completed by Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) with the finalization of the eighth team inclusion in HBL Pakistan Super League. The event was a critical one, where two new teams, Hyderabad and Sialkot, entered Pakistan’s premier Twenty20 competition with a staggering total investment of PKR 3.6 billion. The event was hosted at a convention center in Islamabad.

Record-Breaking Bids for New Franchises

The auction, presided over by PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi, generated immense interest from local and international corporate giants. The bidding for the seventh franchise was held with a base price of Rs1.1 billion. After an aggressive round, the Southeast Asia-based FKS Group, headed by CEO Fawad Sarwar, bagged the team with an attractive winning offer of Rs 1.75 billion. It was later announced that the team was granted to represent the city of Hyderabad, bringing an important cricketing hub of Sindh into the PSL fraternity.
The bidding for the eighth franchise became quite intense, starting with a base price of Rs1.7 billion, with a tenuous three-way battle between Aim Next Inc., i2c, and OZ Developers. In the end, OZ Developers sealed the deal by slapping in a record-breaking offer of Rs1.85 billion, the highest price paid ever for a single team in the history of HBL PSL. The franchise will represent the city of Sialkot, a city world-renowned for its sports goods industry.

A Financial Windfall for Pakistan Cricket

In this changed auction system, this set of franchises has been sold for a 10-year agreement. These bids would imply a certain annual fee, in which the PCB is expected to make around 36 billion rupees every 10 years.
Chairman Mohsin Naqvi called it a “landmark occasion” for this country. “It is not only an expansion; it is a huge vote of confidence in Pakistan Cricket in the international business community,” said Naqvi. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also congratulated the PCB on this occasion. He said that it is a testament to its growing international importance that new franchises and foreign investments have been added.

US Investment and Global Appeal

A notable highlight of the auction was the presence of American companies, reflecting the PSL’s growing global reach. US Charge d’Affaires Natalie Baker, who attended the event, said that such investments strengthen trade and sporting ties between the US and Pakistan.

What’s Next for Fans?

With the addition of Hyderabad and Sialkot, the HBL PSL will move to an eight-team format starting from its 11th edition. This expansion means more matches, more opportunities for young local talent, and a wider geographical reach for the tournament.

For fans in Sialkot and Hyderabad, the dream of having their own home team has finally come true. As Hamza Majid of OZ Developers put it, “Sialkot now has a team to match its rich cricketing history.”
