The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) in Punjab has issued a weather alert warning of rain and snowfall across the upper parts of the province from February 1 to February 3, 2026. The advisory covers hill stations like Murree and Galiyat, as well as surrounding lowland districts, with authorities urging residents and visitors to stay alert and take precautionary measures.
According to the alert, rain showers and snowfall are expected in Murree, Galiyat, and nearby areas, as well as in the Potohar region, including districts such as Sialkot, Narowal, Gujrat, and Gujranwala. Light precipitation is also possible in central and southern districts, though heavier rain and snow are most likely in the upper hills.
Weather System Driving the Alert
Meteorological authorities say the alert follows a western weather system moving across northern Pakistan. Similar systems have previously brought cold conditions, rain, and snowfall to Punjab and neighbouring regions, often accompanied by temperature drops and gusty winds.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) had earlier forecast this system’s arrival, noting that rain and cloudy conditions were expected across the province from late January into early February. Such disturbances typically form when moisture-bearing winds interact with colder air masses over the hills, producing rain in the plains and snow at higher elevations.
Where Weather Is Expected
The PDMA alert highlights two broad zones:
Hilly and Upper Areas
- Murree and the Galiyat range are popular winter tourist destinations
- Higher elevations of northern Punjab
Plains and Lowland Districts
- Potohar region cities such as Sialkot, Narowal, Gujrat, and Gujranwala
- Light rain or drizzle may also occur around Faisalabad, Sargodha, and Multan, though rainfall in these areas is expected to be lighter.
Safety and Preparedness
In response to the alert, PDMA and local authorities have called on health, transport, and emergency services to remain on high alert through the forecast period. Residents and travellers are advised to:
- Avoid unnecessary travel to hill and high-altitude roads during heavy snow.
- Be cautious of slippery and icy road conditions in Murree and Galiyat.
- Monitor updated forecasts and warnings via official channels.
Emergency response teams, including Rescue 1122, are expected to be on standby to assist in case of weather-related disruptions.
Weather alerts such as this are not uncommon in winter months, when Western Disturbances originating from the Mediterranean often bring precipitation to northern and central Pakistan. These systems can influence temperatures and precipitation patterns for several days across the region.
